Laura Ellen (DeSpain) Hill was born June 8, 1948 at Gate, Oklahoma to Ora and Opal (Adams) DeSpain. She was the youngest of ten siblings, eight brothers and one sister.
Shortly after Laura was born, the family moved to Straight, Oklahoma where her dad worked for Cities Service Gas Company. The family lived there, and Laura graduated 8th grade from Straight School and then went to high school in Hooker where she graduated in 1966. Laura went on to college at Panhandle A&M (OPSU) where she met the love of her life, Jerry Hill. They were married July 9, 1970 and immediately left for Jerry's basic training in Georgia.
Their first daughter, Traci was born in Feb. 1971. Laura returned to college and graduated from OPSU in 1974 with a degree in Elementary Education. She started teaching 4th grade at Straight School in the fall of 1974. Their second daughter, Kara was born in Dec. 1976. In the fall of 1986, she took the job of Elementary Superintendent at Straight. She received her Master's degree in Elementary Education Administration in the summer of 1991. She remained in that position until her retirement in 2013. Shortly after retirement, Jerry passed away unexpectedly. Since that time, she enjoyed cruising with her family and friends and experiencing life to the fullest; playing Bunco, joining a Red Hats group, volunteering in CWF, and exercising at the YMCA.
At the time of her death on June 16, 2018 Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her grandson, Logan; her parents, Ora and Opal DeSpain; brothers: Charles, Ron, Gary and O.J. DeSpain and Charles Earnest Beene; and sisters-in-law, Lucette and Mary DeSpain.
