Jack W. Tompkins' Obituary
Jack Wilsey Tompkins was born November 1, 1921 in Hastings, Nebraska to John Wilsey and Fern (Graves) Tompkins. He died Saturday morning, November 12, 2016 at the Heritage Community Manor in Guymon, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and his wife of 70 years, Lenore.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Ellen Kelliher of Aurora, CO; two daughters: Connee Dunn of Denver, CO and Bobbie Grice (Terry) of Guymon, OK; seven grandchildren: Chris Dunn, Mark Dunn, Vicki Dunn, Amy (Jason) McCaslin, Beth (Manerd) Gayler, Clint (Susan) Johnston and Drew (Lacey) Johnston; and thirteen great grandchildren.
Jack was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Corps. He was a tail gunner on the B17 flying fortress, completing 18 bombing missions over Germany until the plane was shot down. He successfully parachuted for the 1st time (as they were taught how to parachute, but there was no time to practice in those perilous times) and was a prisoner of war for about 3 months, before being liberated because the war had ended. During that time, he was made to march from one camp to another in the "death march". Prisoners were so hungry they risked death to steal vegetables from gardens along the way.
Jack was a man of many interests – classic cars, antiques, an insatiable interest in how things work and the safety benefits of running tubes in automobile tires.
His heart was tender towards all animals and he could be found making daily trips to the park to feed the cats, squirrels and ducks. He was an honorable man of outstanding character, loyalties and devotion.
Jack was laid to rest beside his wife, Lenore at the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon. Memorial services are pending and will be announced at a later date. Services are under the care of the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home of Guymon.
The family suggests that memorials in Jack's memory be given to the Guymon Animal Shelter. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 1112, Guymon, OK 73942. Friends can sign the online guestbook and leave condolences at www.bunchroberts.com.
