Donald Eugene Coen, 86 longtime Elkhart, Kansas resident, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 12, 2025 at the Morton County Hospital in Elkhart. The son of Verl Donald and Leleia Ethel (Turner) Coen. He was born November 19, 1938 in Wilburton, Kansas.
Don attended grade school in Wilburton and High School in Elkhart, graduating with the Class of 1956. He attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas and received electronics training at Wichita Technical Institute. He was a member of Community of Christ Church.
Don was married to Norma Jean Lackey in June of 1958. Don and Jean raised 5 children, 4 of whom survive and lost a son Douglas as an infant, and a daughter Christie Kee. He married Velda Kay Humphrey in December 1991.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kelvin and Dwayne Coen.
Survivors include his children Debbie Disch and husband Greg of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Donna Renz of Lakin, Kansas, Barbara Luck and husband Jeff, of Elkhart, Kansas and Donald Alan Coen of Elkhart, Kansas. Survivors also include fourteen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.
Don enjoyed woodworking and was very talented. He made grandfather clocks, trunks, sandboxes, a variety of decor and toys for his family. Don also enjoyed traveling and sightseeing, especially to National Parks. After raising his family, he discovered he enjoyed a different way of sightseeing by way of riding motorcycles. He had a lot of good motorcycle road trips with his son, Alan. Don has written stories about his life to share with his family. He called them his Remembrances and the family enjoys reading them and learning more about him.
Graveside funeral services will be Friday afternoon, January 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rolla Cemetery with Pastor Jess Lee officiating.
