LaVerne Byron "Smitty" Smith, 89, of Texhoma died Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 in Amarillo, Texas.

Smitty was born May 30, 1928, in Ottawa County, Kansas to Bertrand and Doris Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He moved to Texhoma in 1953 and was very involved in the community.

Smitty married June Johnson in October of 1967.

Survivors include his wife, June Smith, of the home; his children, Sandra June Percifield and husband Bill of Keyes, Oklahoma, Cliff Fox and wife Helen, of Amarillo, Blenda Keylon of St. Paul, Nebraska, Derrel "Derry" Smith and wife Kathy of Miami, Texas and GW "Pokey" Smith and wife Alice of Amarillo; a brother, Loren Smith of California; a sister, Shirley Rogers of Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday afternoon, September 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Texhoma First Christian Church with Rev. Larry Watson, pastor of the Guymon First Christian Church officiating.

The family suggests that memorials in Smitty's name be made to a charity of choice. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 1112, Guymon, OK 73942.
