Barbara Jane (Herron) Hammond, 77, longtime Goodwell, Oklahoma resident passed away Friday morning, January 2, 2026 at Hillside Heights Rehabilitation in Amarillo, Texas.

The daughter of Marvin Thomas and Ruby Ilene (Ballinger) Herron, she was born April 18, 1948 in Syracuse, Kansas.  Barbara was raised in Morton County, Kansas where she attended school through the eighth grade at Pleasant Plains country school.  She then attended Elkhart schools, graduating as the valedictorian of the Class of 1966.  Following high school, she attended Panhandle State University in Goodwell, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1970.

Barbara and Alva Hammond were united in marriage on May 25, 1968 in Johnson, Kansas and made Goodwell their home.  Barbara was a devoted 4th grade elementary school teacher.  She taught at Guymon schools, retiring in 2007 and then taught in Ulysses, Kansas for four years.  While at Guymon, she was honored with the distinction of Teacher of the Year.

Barbara enjoyed spending her free time fishing and sewing.  The family cabin in Eagle Nest, New Mexico is covered with her handiwork – from the curtains to the towels.  As a farm girl, she also had a great love and was very skilled at gardening and could grow anything.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Ilene Herron; brother, Curtis Marvin Herron; two brothers-in-law: Donnie O'Bryan and Ray Hammond; and nephew, Jared O'Bryan.

Survivors include her loving husband of over 57 years, Alva Hammond of the home in Goodwell; one son, Jonathan Seth Hammond of Wall, South Dakota; one daughter, Michaela Ranae and husband, Brian Mallory of Amarillo, Texas; two granddaughters: Ashlyn and husband, Matthew Bowen and Jillian Mallory all of Amarillo; with a great granddaughter, Laney Jane due in April.  Barbara is also survived by her two sisters: Judy Kay O'Bryan of Johnson, Kansas and Linda Jean Hammond of Garden City, Kansas, sister-in-law, Debbie Kay Davis and husband, Frank of Guthrie, Oklahoma; along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
